Alfred Stone 1889-

Alfred Stone was my Great Great Uncle, the younger brother of my Great Grandmother, Mary Ann Elizabeth Stone.

He was born on 7th July 1889 in Barking, Essex to William Thomas Stone and Maria Sarah Martin.

The 1911 census shows the 21 year old Alfred living at 56 Cranbourne Road, Barking with his sister Mary Ann, her husband and in laws. Alfred was a farm labourer.

On 16th August 1911 Alfred joined the Royal Navy and began training as a Stoker at HMS Pembroke II, which was a Naval Air Station at Eastchurch, Sheppey, Kent.

Alfred was a Stoker on various Naval ships throughout the First World War. He would have spent the majority of his time stoking the engine and seen very little daylight.

He was discharged from the Navy after ten years service on 4th June 1921. By this time he was a Leading Stoker.

Alfred married Rose Hunt on 22nd November 1920 at St Margaret's, Barking.
