Herbert Leach was my husband’s grandfather and the father of Annie Leach.
The 1891 and 1901 census gives the family’s address as 7 Frost Street, Hulme.
The 1911 census of 2nd April shows him boarding at the home of Emma (nee Smith) and John Patrice – 16 Wragby Street, Manchester.
On 17th April 1911 he married Matilda Heald at Albert Memorial Church, Collyhurst, Manchester and they had 3 daughters and a son before Matilda died in 1918.
Herbert had served in the Territorial Army before 1914.
During WW1 Herbert was a groom at the Cavalry barracks at Colchester, Essex. He enlisted in October 1914 and was discharged as unfit for war service in June 1915. Herbert had suffered from fits after he had the 2nd vaccination that was given to servicemen at that time.
On 14th June 1919 he married Emma Patrice (nee Smith) in Prestwich, Lancashire. Emma had been widowed in 1915.
Herbert and Emma had 5 daughters as well as 3 surviving children from their previous marriages.
Herbert had worked in an iron foundry with John Patrice, as a tram conductor and ran his own business selling firewood from a horse and cart.
He died in 1963 and was buried on 12th September in Manchester Southern Cemetery.
